Sanbornton-----Mindy L. Lane, 74, of 228 Steele Hill Road, died on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at the St. Francis Nursing Home, Laconia, NH.
Miss Lane was born August 14, 1930 in Laconia, NH, the daughter of Leslie Martin and Mindy Oren (Pike) Lane. Miss Lane was a meteorologist for the U. S. Navy for twenty-seven years and for NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) for twelve years before she retired in 1991. After completion of Basic Training in June, 1951, she was assigned to the Naval Air Station, Anacostia, Washington, D.C. and then in 1955, she was transferred to the Naval Air Station, Quonset Point, Rhode Island. Miss Lane was the Forecast Duty Officer at the Fleet Weather Facility Jacksonville, FL from 1957-1960; Fleet Weather Central, Norfolk, VA from 1960-1963; Fleet Weather Facility, Patuxent River, MD from 1963-1966; Fleet Weather Facility Jacksonville, FL from 1966-1967; Fleet Weather Central, Norfolk, VA from 1967-1971 and Fleet Weather Facility, Jacksonville, Florida from 1975-1978. Miss Lane was the Navy?s first female flight forecaster.
In 1992, she moved from Asheville, N.C. to Sanbornton, NH. Miss Lane was a member of the Laconia Congregational Church. She was a member of the American Legion Wilkins-Smith Post No. 1 and a member of the NAWA (Navy Air Weather Association).
Survivors include two brothers, Leslie Lane of Johnson, Vermont and Arthur Lane of Brunswick, Maine; two sisters, Edna Baker of Bradenton, Florida and Ann Lance of Sanbornton, NH and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours.
A Graveside Service will be held at a later date at the family lot in Oakland Cemetery, Meredith, NH.
