Laconia, NH-----Frances Edith Brindis Selig, age 92, lived in Laconia for 65 years, arriving here in 1940 with her husband, Irving. She had recently lived at the Taylor Community's Congregate Living Center.
Born in Milwaukee, WI, in 1913, she had previously lived in Haverhill, MA; graduated from Haverhill High School; and attended Simmons College in Boston until her marriage to Irving in June, 1934. Mrs. Selig's husband, Irving, was a director and principal officer of Laconia Shoe Company, Inc. of Laconia and Lowell, MA, until his death in 1969. Laconia Shoe Company was for 50 years (1937-1987) one of Laconia largest employers.
Mrs. Selig was an active member of Temple B'Nai Israel of which she was a considerable benefactor. She enjoyed duplicate bridge, played with her many friends frequently, and had been Treasurer of the Laconia Bridge Club for many years. She was a 60-year member of Laconia Women's Club, the LRGH Auxiliary, and the Simmons Club of NH. She had been a corporator of Laconia Savings Bank. She was a member of Hadassah and the American Red Cross, and an incorporator of Lakes Region General Hospital. She was a 34-year volunteer in the Gift Shop at LRGH. She was a Friend of Laconia Public Library.
She was devoted to her family which consisted of her sons Robert (of Laconia), Steven (of Gilford), her daughter Margaret (of Laconia), and her daughters-in-law Joyce (of Laconia) and Jeanie (of Gilford). She leaves 7 grandchildren - Mark (of Dobbs Ferry, NY), Eric (of St.Louis, MO), Scott (of West Hartford, CT), Todd (of Durham, NH), Tamara (of Boston, MA), Tari (of Portsmouth, NH), and Tiffany (of Gilford), and 9 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Eugene Brindis (of Palm Harbor, FL), and two sisters, Florence Paris (of Lowell, MA) and Charlotte Howard (of Milwaukee, WI) and nieces and nephews.
Remembrance donations in Mrs. Selig's memory may be made to the Frances Selig Memorial School Fund at Temple B'Nai Israel (210 Court St., Laconia) or to the new Teen Room Book Fund at Laconia Public Library (695 Main St., Laconia). No flowers, please.
Funeral service will be at Temple B'Nai Israel at 11AM on Monday, May 2. Burial will be at Temple B'Nai Israel Cemetery in Union Cemetery, South Academy Street directly following the Funeral.
A memorial period (Shiva) will be observed for 3 nights (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) at the home of Robert and Joyce Selig, 49 Crimson Drive, Laconia (in SouthDown Shores) at 7PM.
