Laconia-----Foster E. Varrell, Jr., 86, of Pine Street, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital on Thursday, April 12, 2007. Mr. Varrell was the widower of Beverly R. Varrell who died March 31, 2003.
Mr. Varrell was born October 23, 1920 in Portsmouth, NH, the son of Lucy (Cole) and Foster E. Varrell, Sr. He was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Margaret and G. Walter Varrell, Sr. He lived most of his life in Laconia.
Mr. Varrell served in the U. S. Navy during WWII and was employed by New England Telephone Co. of many years and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Foster, G. Walter, Jr. and Margaret were the first persons to sing Christmas Carols live on radio station WLNH.
Survivors include four daughters, Leda Hall of Bow, NH, Pamela Byram and Jeanne Fugate, both of Laconia, NH and Candi Legault of Dunbarton, NH; six grandchildren, Heather Cote, of Bow, NH, Christina Sera of Florida; Jeanne Kresco of Laconia, NH, Michael Hoey of Las Vegas, Nevada; Kyle Fugate of Laconia, NH and Dana Legault of Dunbarton, NH; eight great grandchildren; a sister, Lillian Buffet, of Marshalltown, Iowa and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his parents, his adoptive parents, a sister, Hazel Henshaw, and a brother. G. Walter Varrell, Jr.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2007 from 3:00-5:00PM in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH.
A Graveside Service will be held later in the spring at the family lot in Union Cemetery, Laconia, NH.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Rte 101 Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.
