Dr. Barbara Rotundo

Belmont, NH------Dr. Barbara R. Rotundo, 83, of 9 Hemlock Drive, died on Friday, December 24, 2004 at the Lakes Region General Hospital. She was the widow of Joseph Rotundo who died in 1953.

Dr. Rotundo was born May 24, 1921 in Swampscott, MA, the daughter of Ralph and Ruth (Munsey) Bristol. She graduated from Mt. Holyoke College and received her Master's Degree from Cornell University and her PhD from Syracuse University.

Dr. Rotundo lived in Schenectady, New York for many years and was the first woman professor at Union College in Schenectady. She was also an English Professor at SUNY Albany, New York where she established one of the first writing workshops. Dr. Rotundo was a cemetery historian and was an international speaker and author regarding 19th Century gravestones. She was a long-time peace activist.

Dr. Rotundo was a member of the Quaker Meeting, Schenectady, NY. She was a member of the Association of Gravestone Studies, a member of the Friends of Highgate (London) Cemetery, and was a member of the Society of Architectural Historians. She served on the Schenectady, New York Board of Education for several years. After her retirement in 1989, she moved to Belmont.

Survivors include a son, Edward Anthony Rotundo, and his wife, Kathleen Dalton, of Andover, MA; two daughters, Ruth Ann Rotundo Whitney of Cambridge, MA and Margaret Rose Rotundo and her husband, Loring Danforth, of Lewiston, Maine; four grandchildren, Barbara and Peter Rotundo and Nicholas and Ann Danforth; a brother, Ralph B. Bristol, Jr. of Gilmanton I. W. and Green Valley, AZ; a sister, Shirley Bristol Bacon, of Laconia; two nieces and two nephews.

There will be no calling hours.

A Memorial Service will be held at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, MA and also at the Smith Meeting House, Gilmanton. Dates and times will be announced.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Belmont Public Library, PO Box 310, Belmont, NH 03220 or to the Rotundo Fund c/o Office of Development, Mt. Holyoke College, 50 College Street, South Hadley, MA 01075.
