Stephen Ellsworth Childs

Meredith Center-----Stephen Ellsworth Childs, 89, of 9 Livingston Road, Meredith Center, N.H. died peacefully at home on February 21. He was born May 10, 1914 in Ludlow, Massachusetts, the son
of Rev. Irving and Lizzie (Wallace) Childs. He was the widower of Lavina (Barr) Childs who died in 1990.

He attended elementary and high school in Huntington, MA. He received a Bachelors of Music (Œ35) and a Bachelors of Science (Œ37) from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. He also attended Columbia Bible College in Columbia, SC and served in the U.S. Navy. He received a Masters of Music from Boston University. Stephen pastored churches in Lower Waterford and Benson,VT, Buckland, MA, Glencliff, and Weirs, NH. He taught music in the Rumney school district from 1946-1953 and in the Laconia public schools from 1954-1956. From 1959 -1978 he was music therapist at the Laconia State School and from 1969 - 1986 he was organist at the South Baptist Church in Laconia.

He was also self-employed tuning and repairing pianos and organs through out a large area of the state. Members of his family include 6 children, Elsie Ivester of Meredith Center, Irving Childs of Meredith Center, Alice Childs - missionary with SEND International serving in the Philippines, Ruth Bartlett of Orange Park, FL., Edwin Childs, professor of music at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, and Robert Childs of Ocala, FL.; 16 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. Beside his wife in was predeceased by his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be conducted on Sat. February 28, 2004, 11:00 AM at the South Baptist Church, 85 Court Street Laconia, NH. The Rev. Barry Armitage, pastor of the church and Rev. Don Sweimler, pastor of the Wentworth Congregational Church of Wentworth will officiate. Spring burial will be in the family lot in Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers Memorial donations may be made to SEND International, Box 513, Farmington, Michigan 48332 for the work of Alice Childs in the Philippines.
