Dr. Donald M. Meyer

Laconia---Dr. Donald M. Meyer, 82, of 21 Ledges Drive and formerly of Tuftonboro Neck NH, died on Sunday, January 4, 2004 at the Congregate Living Center, Taylor Community, Laconia.

Dr. Meyer was born March 22, 1921 in Arlington, MA, the son of Max and Dora (Philpot) Meyer. He was raised in Cohasset, MA, the youngest of three children. He spent summers at the family's boys camp, Boycroft, on Tuftonboro Neck, NH and later became Camp Director for many years. Dr. Meyer studied Physical Education at Springfield College, Springfield, MA and after graduation he entered the U.S.Navy. He was recipient of the Bronze Star. After WWII, he married Elizabeth Work and joined the faculty of Delaware Valley College, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, teaching psychology. He attained his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and became Dean of Delaware Valley College. He served as a consultant to the U. S. Office of Education and later became Associate Director of Education for the State of Connecticut. Dr. Meyer retired to his beloved Lake Winnipesaukee, building a home at Winter Harbor, the site of Boycroft.

Dr. Meyer was active in many community groups, including Rotary. He volunteered at Brewster Academy, Wolfeboro, NH and stayed in touch with many former campers and counselors from Boycroft. Dr. Meyer was a member of a walking club and his favorite pastimes were photography and mountain climbing. Some of his favorite memories involved athletics. He loved being the strongest member of the team.

Dr. Meyer's Grandfather Philpot was an art critic for the Boston Globe and his father-in-law, Dr. James Work, was the Founder and President of Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth & Stephen Hill of Avon, CT and Bertie and Rick Bauer of Wolcott, CT; two grandchildren; one great grandchild; a sister, Jean M. Ray, Cambridge, MA; three nephews; four nieces and his former wife, Elizabeth Work Meyer of Burlington, CT.

There will be no calling hours.

A Time of Reflection for Dr. Meyer is being planned for the Summer of 2004 on Tuftonboro Neck, NH. Those interested in attending and/or need additional information are requested to e-mail www.wilkinsonbeane.com.

A private burial will be held at a later date at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, MA

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Delaware Valley College, Office of Institutional Advancement, 700 E. Butler Avenue, Doylestown, Pennsylvania 18901.
