Gilford, NH-----Alma Forward Derry, 79, of Lakeshore Road, passed away unexpectedly at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia, on Saturday, January 21, 2006. She had been a resident of Bishop Bradley Apartments since September 2005.
Mrs. Derry was born in Boston, MA on September 30, 1926 and was the daughter of William John and Rebecca Groves Forward who had immigrated from Newfoundland, Canada. She graduated from Roxbury Memorial High School in 1942 and was employed by two insurance firms in Boston and later for the Army ROTC Office at M.I.T. in Boston, MA. In 1943, she met Wendell Derry and they married in 1946. Alma lived for many years in Randolph, MA while bringing up their two daughters and spent approximately 10 years in Sandwich, MA as well as Gilford, NH. She and her husband owned a summer cabin on Lake Winona in New Hampton for fifty-threeyears and enjoyed summers there.
Mrs. Derry was very active in volunteer work. She sang in church choirs in Hyde Park, MA and Randolph, MA. She also taught Sunday School and was a Sunday School Superintendent. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, she was active in Girl Scouting. She served as a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader and Consultant. She was Chairman of Girl Scouting in North Randolph, MA at one time. Other organizations for which she volunteered were the American Cancer Society, the Red Cross Bloodmobiles and also the Cape Cod Hospital. Mrs. Derry was a member of the Ladies Benevolent Association of the Randolph (MA) Congregational Church and a member of the Couples Club and Pairs and Spares.
She was also a member of the Congregational Church in Laconia and was secretary for the Laconia Elders Friendship Club for many years. She enjoyed crocheting and made many afghans for At Risk Childre . Mrs. Derry is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Greg Doyon of Massachusetts and Linda and Mark Heminway of New Hampshire; three
grandchildren, Jeff Heminway, Jamie Heminway and Christopher Doyon; a sister, Minetta Waite of West Roxbury, MA and one close cousin, Gladys Copeland, of Milton, MA. She was predeceased by her husband, Wendell Derry, on September 15, 2005.
There will be no calling hours.
A Private Funeral Service will be held and private burial will be in the family lot in Brookdale Cemetery, Dedham, MA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Francis Healthcare Center Activities Fund, 406 Court Street, Laconia, NH 03246.
