Dr. John C. Evvard

Gilford, NH-----Dr. John C. Evvard, 87 of Weeks Road, Gilford, died peacefully at Lakes Region General Hospital on Monday, July 7, 2003.  Born in Ames, Iowa in 1915, he graduated valedictorian at Phoenix Junior College in 1936, received his Bachelor of Science in 1939 and Master of Science in 1940.  In 1943 he graduated cum laude from the California Institute of Technology with a Ph.D. in Physics.
           
In 1942 Dr. Evvard joined the U.S. Government National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) where he conducted and supervised research for thirty-one years in rocket fuels, lubricants, supersonic aerodynamics, propulsion, and nuclear energy for the space program. He was also an instructor at Case-Western Reserve University and a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
         
Dr. Evvard was the assistant director of NASA, Lewis Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio, supervising six divisions with a total complement of about 1,000 engineers and researchers.  He was the Associate Director from 1970-72 and Lewis Research Center‘s Chief Scientist from 1971-73. He received many awards during his career including NASA’s Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal. Dr. Evvard was active in the AIAA and the American Physical Society where he was on the board of the fluid dynamics section, was a Fellow of the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.  He published over 60 research papers and had a number of patents.
         
Dr. Evvard retired in 1973 and lived in Gilford with his wife Jean. Dr. Evvard was past President and Treasurer of the Thompson Ames Historical Society, helped to organize the POSH club, an organization devoted to promote horse showing in the Gilford area, and was active in the NH Music Festival and Treasurer and Points Keeper for NE Paint Horse Club for many years.
         
He is survived by wife Jean, of Gilford, one sister Martha J. Shemer of Phoenix Arizona, 8 children; Jenny Krajewski of Modesto Calif., Karin Armstrong of Bartelsville Oklahoma, Gary McCoy of Niantic Illinois, Thomas McCoy of Kearney NE, John M. Evvard of Belmont, NH, Beverly Evvard of Oakdale CT, Dr. Martin Evvard of Rochester, NH and Lorraine Powell of Gilford, NH. Dr. Evvard also is survived by 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
         
There will be no calling hours or funeral services.
         
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Thompson-Ames Historical Society, PO Box 7404, Gilford, NH 03247-7404 or to the NH Music Festival, 52 Symphony Lane, Center Harbor, NH 03226.
