Laconia-----Harold Achber, 76, of 181 Lynnewood Road, died at his home on Thursday, July 15, 2004.
Mr. Achber was born June 16, 1928 in Laconia, NH, the son of the late Samuel D. & Fannie (Wexler) Achber. He was lifetime resident of Laconia, graduating from Laconia High School in 1946 and from the University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH in 1950. He was a captain in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War.
Mr. Achber was a photographer for fifty years and was owner of Achber Photo Studio on Canal Street, Laconia, NH. He retired in 2000. Mr. Achber was a member of Temple B'Nai Israel. Mr. Achber served as a Laconia City Councilman, Ward I, from 1971-1975. He was a Director of the Laconia Savings Bank; a Corporator of the Taylor Home and the Lakes Region Charitable Trust; a past president of the Opechee Park Club and the Winnipesaukee Shrine Club; a member of the Bektash Shrine; a member of the Mount Lebanon Lodge No. 32 F. & A.M. since 1958; the Laconia Lodge of Elks #876; the Laconia Historical Society; the American Legion Wilkins-Smith Post No 1 and was a past volunteer of the N. H. Marine Patrol Auxiliary. He was co-founder of the Lou Athanas Youth Basketball League.
Survivors include his wife, Rachel (Sandhaus) Achber, of Laconia, NH; two sons, Steven L. Achber and Jeffrey N. Achber both of Laconia, NH; a sister, Nancy Vermes, of Paris, France; one niece, Kali Vermes, of Paris, France and one nephew, Dimitri Vermes, of New York City, NY.
Calling Hours will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2004 from 5:00-8:00PM in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH. The Laconia Lodge of Elks #876 will conduct a Session of Sorrow at 5:30 PM and the Mt. Lebanon Lodge will conduct a Service at 7:00PM at the Funeral Home during the calling hours.
A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, July 18, 2004 at 3:00 PM at Temple B'Nai Israel, 210 Court Street, Laconia, NH.
Burial will follow in the family lot at Union Cemetery, Academy Street, Laconia, NH.
Shiva will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 181 Lynnewood Road, Laconia, NH beginning at 7:00PM on Monday, July 19, 2004.
