George J. Barton

Gilford-----George J. Barton, 92, of 100 Watson Road, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia on Thursday, July 7, 2005 after a brief illness.

Mr. Barton was born October 26, 1912 in Ziaka Grevena, Greece, the son of John D. and Eleni (Rova) Barton. He immigrated to the United States in September, 1930 aboard the SS Byron out of Pireas, Greece and lived in Bellows Falls, Vermont. In 1937 he moved to Laconia and in 1938 he purchased land on the shore of Paugus Bay in Laconia and founded Barton’s Motel.

Mr. Barton served in the U. S. Army in the Pacific during WWII . He had been a member of the Mt. Lebanon Lodge #32 F. & A. M since 1949; was a member of the Bektash Temple, the Knights Templar and a member of the I.O.O.F., Chocorua Lodge. He loved his flower gardens at the Motel and enjoyed cooking and wildlife.

Survivors include his wife, Ida (Copadis) Barton, of Gilford; two sons, John G. Barton and his wife, Cheryl M., of Gilford and Christopher G. Barton of Laconia and two grandchildren, Christina E. M. Barton of Moultonboro and Nicholas J. G. Barton of Gilford.

Calling Hours will be held on Sunday, July 10, 2005 from 6:00-8:00PM in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 11, 2005 at 11:00AM at the Taxiarchai Greek Orthodox Church, 8ll North Main Street, Laconia, NH.

Burial will follow in the family lot in Union Cemetery, Laconia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Taxiarchai Greek Orthodox Church, 811 North Main Street, Laconia, NH 03246.
