Rochester------Arthur J. Smith, Sr. 71, of 2F Well Sweep Acres, died at the VA Medical Center, White River Jct., Vermont on Wednesday, June 16, 2004.
Mr. Smith was born April 17, 1933 in Belmont, NH, the son of Leslie E. and Margaret (Fogg) Smith.
Mr. Smith served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War. He served on the USS Wasp (CV-18) Aircraft Carrier which was involved with the destroyer, USS Hobson, in the worst peace time disaster in U. S. Navy History at 10:26PM on April 26, 1952.
Mr. Smith lived in Gilmanton for several years before moving to Rochester over two years ago. He was a pattern maker and worked for Wyman-Gordon in Tilton for twenty-six years, retiring in October, 1991.
Survivors include a son, Arthur J. Smith, Jr. of Bedford, NH; three sisters, Marguerite E. Marsten of Donna, TX, Shirley Maxfield of Loudon, NH and Mary Maxfield of Zephyr Hills, FL.; an aunt, Nellie Varney; two cousins, Herman “Jr” Young and John Young, all of Alton, NH; and good friends, Charlie and Karen Kurz and Family. He was predeceased by his brothers, Nathan R. Smith in 1994 and George L. Smith in 2004.
There will be no calling hours.
A private funeral service will be held.
Private family burial will be held at the NH State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH.
