Send a condolence note
West Alton----- Mrs. Barbara A. Fortier died peacefully at her home in West Alton on Thursday, June 4, 2009.
Born Barbara A. Clough on March 5, 1942, she was raised in West Alton, graduated from Laconia High School in 1960 and settled here with her husband, Elwin C. Fortier, upon her graduation from the University of New Hampshire.
In the 1980’s, Barbara took over management of her family business, West Alton Marina, where she continued working until her death. She will be remembered fondly by many long time customers for ruling with a heart of gold and an iron fist. Her children proudly had joined her in running the family business, established in 1962 by her parents, Harold and Ruth Clough.
Barbara was an active member of The Congregational Church of Laconia. While living in West Alton, she enjoyed her Friday night “Card Parties” on Glidden Road and Bingo nights at Funspot.
Upon her husband’s retirement, the Fortiers began travelling throughout the world, including South Africa, where she visited her childhood friend, Connie Symons, and much of Europe. After Elwin’s death, she continued travelling with her friends from the Prestige Plus Club of Laconia Savings Bank. Barbara also enjoyed time with friends and family in Florida, where she spent much of the winter months in the past few years.
Barbara leaves behind three children: her daughter, Deirdre A. Tibbetts, and her husband, Peter, and their children, Kyle and Kayla, all of Belmont, N.H.; her son, Brian A. Fortier, and his partner, John E. Murray III, of West Alton, N.H. and Fort Lauderdale, Florida; her daughter, Allyson R. Shea and her husband, SSG Tobias Shea, and their child, Gabriel Elwin Shea, all of West Alton and Loveland, Colorado and her sister, Dianne (Clough) Zuppe and her husband, Thomas, of Troy, Vermont and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Elwin C. Fortier, in 2003.
There will be no calling hours.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 19, 2009 at 11:00AM at The Laconia Congregational Church, 18 Veterans Square, Laconia, N.H. Rev. Dr. Warren H. Bouton, Pastor of the Church, will officiate.
