Newton, MA---Ruth S. Curtis, a long-time resident of Gilford, NH, died peacefully on March 6, 2006 at the age of 89.
Born Nov. 17, 1916 in Denison, TX, she was the daughter of Charles A. and Christobel (Crittenden) Sampsell, and the wife of the late H. Leslie Curtis. She moved to New Hampshire at the time of her marriage at the age of 18. After a few years in Durham, NH, the couple moved back to her husband’s family home in Gilford, where she lived until 2002. From 1938 until the mid-60’s, the Curtises operated a blueberry growing business which was renowned in the region.
Ruth was a long-time member of the Gilford Community Church and a long-time friend of the Christian Science church. She was employed at Bartlett’s Gift Shop, Lakes Region General Hospital, O’Shea’s department store, and Laconia Savings Bank.
She was a talented quilt-maker, and made many quilts for family members and friends. She and Leslie were members of the Gaslight Players of the Gilford PTA. Ruth was a welcoming member of the community and a friend to all who came to her door.
Survivors include a son, Adrian S. Curtis and his wife Susan (Roy) of Gilford; a daughter Charmian C. Proskauer and her husband Alan Gurwitt of Newton, MA; five grandchildren, Lesley Beth Curtis and her husband Chris Thomas of Truckee, CA, Rebecca J. Curtis of Brooklyn, NY, Susanna A. Curtis of Gilford, Daniel C. Proskauer and his wife Rebecca (Guy) of Newton, MA and
Timothy C. Proskauer and his wife Maria Valerio of Guaynabo, PR; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter Jeananne A. Curtis, who died in 1957.
There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held in Pine Grove Cemetery in Gilford at a later date.
