Laconia---Ernest Francis Gallant, Jr., 80, of 906 North Main Street Laconia, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at Genesis Eldercare Center after a long illness. He was born in Boston, the son of Ernest and Gladys Gallant. He lived in Concord, NH before moving to Laconia about 65 years ago and was a graduate of Laconia High School.
As a card holding member of the IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees) and the MPMOP (Moving Picture Machine Operators of US and Canada), he worked the Lakeport Theater, Gardens Theater, Colonial Theater, Weirs Drive-In, and Lakes Region Cinema. He was the owner of Ernie’s Sunoco on Court Street.
During World War II, Ernie served as a SeaBee in the Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor. He was a former member of the Navy SeaBees Veterans of America Association Island X4 unit.
He enjoyed woodworking and was an amateur inventor, an avid gardener, and collector of Big Band Music. Ernie is survived by his wife of more than 55 years, Pauline Morin Gallant, of Laconia; one son, Michael L. Gallant, and his wife, Jane, of Gilford; two daughters, Gloria E. Gallant of Belmont and Gayle H. Gallant of Laconia; six grandchildren, Dawn Eastman of Belmont, Leslie Lovely of Laconia, Julie Gaillard of Florida, Deborah Gallant of Scotland, Scott Fazzina of Gilford, and Samantha Gallant of Boston. He also leaves behind three great grandchildren: Jacob Sykes, Andrew Sykes, and Riley Sykes of Laconia plus several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Mary M. “Beryl” Nelson, of Concord, NH.
There will be no calling hours. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association of NH, 9 Cedarwood Dr. Unit 12, Bedford, NH 03110.
