Laconia ---Mrs. Pauline R. Johnson, 91, of 3 Greystone Place, died May 1, 2004, at Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia.
Mrs. Johnson was the widow of Atty. Robert V. Johnson, who died November 26, 1999. They were husband and wife for 64 years.
Mrs. Johnson was born November 15, 1912, at her parents’ residence on Gilford Avenue, Laconia. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Edwin J. and Grace (Moore) Roberts. She was a lifetime resident of Laconia, excepting 1916-1917 when she lived in Brooklyn, New York, and 1918 - 1921 when she lived in Waterville, Maine, while her father was teaching chemistry at New York Technical Institute and Colby College. Mrs. Johnson graduated from Laconia High School in 1930 and attended the University of New Hampshire, class of 1934. In the 1940’s she was the office manager for J. L. Roberts, a coal, wood, and ice business, founded by her grandfather, John L. Roberts, at the intersection of Water and Fair Streets, Laconia. She later studied for and became a floral designer. On April 21, 1962, she started working at Whittemore’s Flower Shop, Laconia, retiring 33 years later.
Mrs. Johnson was a lifetime member of the Laconia Congregational Church, where she chaired and served on many committees. She was a Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, a former President of the Laconia Women’s Club, and a member of the Opechee Garden Club.
On September 19, 1946, Mrs. Johnson, together with Janet Walker, Muriel Kinsman, Helen Martin, Shirley Minor, Dorothy Weeks, Fern Miller and Kitty Mann, founded “The Bridge Club”, which continues today.
Known to her friends as “Polly”, she enjoyed doing community service, teaching floral arranging and decorating, flower gardening, story telling, playing the piano, working with young people, and compiling and passing on the quaint, every-day sayings she remembered from her youth.
Survivors include: two sons, Atty. Robert Veiling Johnson, II, of Concord and Moultonborough, and Gregory Keith Johnson, an architect, of Corea, Maine and Aho, New Mexico; four grandchildren, Celia Annah Calkins of Concord, New Hampshire, Jared Veiling Johnson of Northfield, New Hampshire, Keith Edwin Johnson of Gray, Maine, and Dana Kent Johnson of Casco, Maine; four great grandchildren; a niece, Christine L. Roy of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and a nephew, Jay T. Roberts of Ft. Collins, Colorado. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a younger brother, Dr. John E. Roberts, in 1998.
There will be no calling hours.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2004, at 11:00 a.m., at the Laconia Congregational Church, Veterans Square, Laconia. Rev. David A. Travers, Interim Pastor of the church, will officiate. Following the service, there will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall of the Parish House, next door.
A private burial will be in the family lot in Union Cemetery, Laconia.
