Anthi Poulos Jones

POTOMAC, Md. — Anthi Poulos (Karagianis) Jones of Potomac, died Feb. 6, 2004, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda.

She was born in Sparta, Greece and has lived in the Washington, D.C., area since 1969.

She was the wife of Wiley Newell Jones of Potomac; the mother of Catherine Paraskevi Jones of Potomac and Helleni Donovan of Burke, Va.; the daughter of Peter S. and Lydia Karagianis of Laconia, N.H. and the late Helen Karagianis; the sister of S. Peter Karagianis and his wife Jane of Laconia, N.H.; grandmother of Christian Donovan; and granddaughter of the late George and Paraskevi Lymberopoulos and Sotirios and Maria Karagianis.

She received a bachelor of arts from Solbury College in Putney, Vt.; a master of arts in Russian studies from American University in Washington, D.C.; a Juris Doctor in international law from American University; and studied at the Hague Academy on International Law in The Hague, The Netherlands.

She was a retired U.S. Senate staff attorney and former Scholar in Residence in the Law Library of Congress. She was previously employed by U.S. Senators Tom McIntyre, D-N.H.; Charles "Mac" Mathias, R-Md.; John Glenn, D-Ohio; Hank Brown, R-Colo. and U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis, R-Colo.

Mrs. Jones was founder and chair of the Committee on World War II Art Claims; founder and chair of the Committee on the Parthenon; and member, American Bar Association Steering Committee for the Committee on International Cultural Property.

She published "The 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict" and numerous articles on the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles.

She was a member of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

A Graveside Service will be held at the family lot in Union Cemetery, Academy Street, Laconia, NH on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at 1:00 PM.  Following the Service, a luncheon will be held at the Greek Orthodox Church, 811 North Main Street, Laconia, NH.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Greek Orthodox Church of Laconia, 811 North Main Street, Laconia, NH 03246 or to the Scholarship Fund at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, 9101 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20814.
