Laconia-Rev. Dr. E. Ray Burchell, 94, of The Taylor Home, and formerly of Lower Bay Road, Sanbornton, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital on Monday, March 11, 2002. He was the widower of A. Millicent (Rook) Burchell who died October 1, 2001 after 66 years of marriage.
Rev. Burchell was born March 9, 1908 in Pittsburg, PA, the son of Ralph W. and Isa (Rhoderick) Burchell. He was ordained in 1935 and received his honorary doctorates degree from Piedmont College in Georgia.
Rev. Burchells first church was in Braddock, PA. His second church was in Kingston, NH followed by 12 years in Chester, CT. He came to the Laconia Congregational Church in 1951, ministering until 1956. In 1956, he moved to Milwaukee, WI where he served for 14 years at the North Shore Congregational Church. During his tenure in Milwaukee, he was a delegate to the International Conference of Churches in Rotterdam, Holland. He traveled to the Holy Land and was chosen to preach at an Abbey in England. His last church was in Danbury, CT where he retired in 1978. He moved back to Sanbornton on Lake Winnisquam where he had summered for twenty-five years. He moved to the Taylor Home in 1998 after twenty years as a year round resident of Sanbornton. After he retired, he was an interim minister at several churches throughout New Hampshire.
Rev. Burchell was a member of the Congregational Church of Laconia and the Friendship Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Ann B. Daoust of W. Hartford, CT and Gay B. Lauderback of Cherry Hill, NJ; three grandchildren, Parrin Daoust Durso of Pittsfield, MA, and Kristina Lauderback and Charles Lauderback, Jr. both of Cherry Hill, NJ; and several nephews and nieces.
In lieu of calling hours, the family will receive friends following the funeral service at the church.
The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2002 at 2:00 PM at the Congregational Church of Laconia, 18 Veterans Square, Laconia. The Rev. David A. Travers, Interim Senior Pastor of The Congregational Church, will officiate. He will be assisted by Rev. Dr. Robert Naylor who was Rev. Burchells former associate in Danbury, CT. and who is currently the Pastor of the Second Congregational Church in Greenwich, CT.
Spring burial will be in the family lot in Union Cemetery, Laconia, NH
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Hampshire Association for the Blind, McGreal Sight Center, 25 Walker Street, Concord, NH 03301-9977.
