Gilford----Robert P. Batchelder, 86, of 113 Belknap Pt. Road, died after a short illness, at the Congregate Living Center, Taylor Community, Laconia, on Tuesday, October 11, 2005, surrounded by his family and friends. He was the widower of A. Virginia (Eaton) Batchelder who died in 2004.
Mr. Batchelder was born August 19, 1919 in Plainfield, Vermont, the son of Nathaniel and Ruth (Vincent) Batchelder. He served in the U. S. Army
during WWII. His Infantry Division was the first to land on the Beaches of Normandy.
Mr. Batchelder was in the construction field in Vermont before moving to New Hampshire. In the early 1950’s, he and his wife founded the Belknap Point Motel in Gilford which was the first motel in New Hampshire to receive a 4 Diamond rating from the AAA.
Mr. Batchelder was a fifty-year member of the Laconia-Gilford Lions Club. He was a very active member and constructed the first concession stands that were used at the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Marcella and John Stanton, of Duxbury, MA; a brother, Rev. Roland Batchelder of Wilton, Maine; two sisters, Madeline Addie of Florida and Marion Corson of Maryland and several nephews and nieces including Jo Ann Taft-Blakely of Colchester, Vermont.
A Calling Hour will be held on Friday, October 14, 2005 from 1:00-2:00PM in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH.
A Funeral Service will follow the calling hour at 2:00PM also at the Funeral Home. Rev. Roland Batchelder, Mr. Batchelder’s brother, will officiate.
Burial will be in the Upper Plain Cemetery, Bradford, Vermont on Saturday, October 15, 2005 at 1:00PM.
