Laconia----Betsye A. Fitzgerald, 88, of 21 Ledges Drive and formerly of 1370 Old North Main Street, passed away at the Lakes Region General Hospital on Monday, September 20, 2004. She was the widow of Edward J. Fitzgerald, Jr. They had resided in Laconia since 1952.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was born May 30, 1916 in Holly Springs, North Carolina, the daughter of Paul and Clyda (Howard) Porter.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was a math teacher in the Laconia School District for 21 years, retiring in 1986. She was active in local and state politics and took an active part in many political campaigns. She was a volunteer for Community Health & Hospice, Lakes Region General Hospital, the Laconia Library, the Belmont Library and the library at the Congregate Living Center.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was an avid bridge player and was a fan of the North Carolina "Tar Heels" and the Boston Red Sox.
Survivors include three sons, Edward J. Fitzgerald III and his wife, Sandra, Paul T. Fitzgerald and his wife, Cheryl, all of Laconia, and Michael Fitzgerald and his wife, Mary Lynn, of Hopkinton; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.
There will be no calling hours.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 23, 2004 at 7:00PM in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH. Rev. Sharron Lamothe, Pastor of the United Baptist Church of Lakeport and Rev. Marc Drouin, Pastor of St. Michael's Parish of Exeter, NH, a former student of Mrs. Fitzgerald, will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Laconia Public Library, Campaign for the Second Century, PO Box 160, Laconia, NH 03247-0160.
